Simi Valley knew it would perform well enough on the track Thursday to put pressure on defending Marmonte League girls' champion Thousand Oaks.
But the Lancers' combined 34-point edge in the shot put, discus throw, pole vault and high jump was too much for the visiting Pioneers to overcome in a 73-63 setback.
Sarah Baxter doubled in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters for Simi Valley, clocking 5 minutes, 0.97 seconds and 10:54.47, with Amanda Hamilton winning the 300 hurdles (50.37) and triple jump (34 feet, 4 inches), along with taking second in the 400 (1:02.63) behind teammate Micalia Butcher (1:02.58). The Pioneers, who defeated Royal 123-13, received a victory in the 200 from Sunita Shelly (27.01) and swept the 400, 1,600 and 300 hurdles to remain within striking distance, but Thousand Oaks clinched the victory with two events still remaining.
Katherine Reaves doubled in the shot put (31-2 1/2) and discus (81-11 1/2) for the Lancers and Karsen Sper captured the 100 hurdles (16.34) and tied for the victory in the pole vault with teammate Crystal Ashe, clearing 9-6. Angelyn Caldwell (5-0) led a sweep in the high jump for Thousand Oaks, which also knocked off Royal 118-18.
Caitlin Turner won the 800 (2:22.25) and Kristine Quiroz prevailed in the 100 (12.84) in addition to taking third in the 200 for Thousand Oaks, which received a runner-up effort from Melanie Joerger in the 3,200 (11:17), second-place finishes from Jillian Krulac in the 100, long jump and triple jump,and Meredith Bell placing second in the 200 and third in the triple jump.
Boys' track and field
Thousand Oaks 84, Royal 52: Tommy Lopez doubled in the 800 (1:59.94) and 1,600 (4:30.12) for the defending Marmonte champion Lancers, who also defeated Simi Valley.
Philip Hanley won the long jump (6-0), pole vault (12-0) and took second in the discus throw (126-7) behind teammate Taylor Blaine (137-10) for Thousand Oaks, which received victories from Marco Godinez in the 3,200 (9:57.23), Kevin Ho in the 400 (52.86), J.J. Davis in the long jump (19-7), Garrison Denim in the shot put (39-7), Kurt Foster in the triple jump (39-6 1/2) and Dustin Kowell in the 110 hurdles (17.04). Matthew Ringgold swept the 100 (11.40) and 200 (23.45) for Simi Valley, which received another win from Travis Goodwin in the 300 hurdles (43.14).
