The Great Cow Run

PRESS RELEASE
CERRITOS, CA – This year’s meet could ARRRRguably be one of the best meet in the history of the Great Cow Run as a solid field of team join the start line in this year’s meet. While a slew of teams who have returned year after year will be in the field, the additions of new teams such as Ayala, Julian, and a first time CIF competitor, Da Vinci, should add to the intrigue of this year’s meet.
The girls side should showcase a great individual battle up front with three of the top eight finishers from last year’s CA Division II Championships and three of the top four returners in Amber Gore (Redondo Union), Samantha Ortega (Saugus), and Claire Graves (Citrus Valley). However, don’t let that stop South Torrance’s Kimberly Cosica from defending her individual title at this meet from last season. Rachel Iida is also another athlete with CA State credentials as she finished 22nd in Division III at last year’s meet for Yorba Linda. Edison’s Julia Sienski, Huntington Beach’s Cassie Durgy, Cypress’ Alyssa Allen and Downey’s Brittney Martinez are a few others notables in a field who have had success in previous years. Some of the highlighted crop of 2018 athletes include Mariah Castillo (Saugus) who is one of the top incoming freshmen in the nation, McKenzie Cornell (Serrano), and Nasim Motaghedi (Cerritos) who won the second of the Gahr 2-Mile Series this summer. While the team battle is always difficult to determine, it should be a good team battle between Saugus, Redondo Union, and Serrano with a number of strong teams right on their heels. However, there are a list of teams looking to challenge especially if these squads approach the meet with a limited roster as expected. Ayala, King, Long Beach Poly, Marina, Santa Margarita, South Torrance, and Yorba Linda are just a few of the teams that always seem to be competitive and have challenged for the title in year’s past.
The boys field looks to host a number of quality athletes as well as athletes such as Carlos Suarez (Redondo Union), Nobert Osorio (Fountain Valley), Adam Viellela (El Modena), Nick Iofgren (South Torrance), and George Gleason (Huntingon Beach) are a few names that stand out in the crowd here in a good mix of solid athletes. For teams, Redondo Union (large) and El Modena (small) will look to defend their team titles at the meet, as they will face a group of tough competitors. Returning Division II Champions Saugus graduated almost half of their squad, but always assume that they will be able to fill that void similar to Loyola, who always has been competitive, winning four of the five sweepstakes title and having an athlete on the top five list in every division. Redondo Union returns a team that finished 5th at the state meet, with Serrano, Cathedral, Ayala, and South Torrance among another list of solid teams that always are sure to be mentioned. Esperanza, the defending small school OC County Champions, looks to be a solid challenger in the small schools division behind Brandon Powell and Blake Harris.
Of course, this is just a preview of the many fine teams and individuals who will appear at this meet and like in previous years, we will see individuals and teams rise to the challenge! Come join us at Cerritos Regional Park in Cerritos, CA to see who will claim the treasure at the Great Cow Run 2014: Pirates of the COWribbean.
The Great Cow Run is hosted by Cerritos High School in a city formerly known as Dairy Valley. The cow is a symbol of the history of the city, as its transportation system in the city is named after it, the COW (Cerritos on Wheels). While much of that history is gone, with the city developing with some of the most cutting-edge technology developments including their Performing Arts Center and the Cerritos Millennium Library, the cow will continue to be a symbol of the rich history of the city. The race also hosts a memorial open race prior to the high school race which is run in memory of two Cerritos High School alumni, Darren Higashi and Regina Nicole Roman. The Higashi Roman Memorial Run begins at 7:15am with the high school invitational beginning shortly thereafter at 8am.
