SEATTLE – During the fall singing period, the Husky track and field program put together the first part of a major 2017-18 freshman class, with thirteen new Dawgs signing their Letters of Intent in November. Washington can add more commitments to the class in the spring period, which starts in April.

Head Coach Greg Metcalf and his assistants signed six men and seven women including five Washington state natives, three Arizona products, two athletes from California, one from Montana, and two Canadian athletes.

There are two throwers in the mix, but the rest of the commits are middle or long distance runners, as UW reloads in those events. Washington middle and long distance runners scored more points combined at last year's Pac-12 Track & Field Championships than any other conference school.

"The success of our distance runners during the 2015-16 cross country and track seasons really paved the way for this recruiting class which is one of our deepest ever on the distance side," said Head Coach Greg Metcalf. "It really fired them up and they wanted to be a part of what Washington stood for academically and athletically. Then Coach Schutz has brought on two very talented throwers that fill a key area of need for us in the discus. But this distance group we think has amazing talent at 800-meters all the way up to the 5k, steeplechase, and 10k. They are hard-nosed, motivated high achievers in their high schools and will thrive in our team environment."
